About Body Fat Calculation
What is Body Fat Percentage?
Body fat percentage is the proportion of fat to your total body weight. Unlike BMI, it distinguishes between fat mass and lean mass (muscle, bone, organs, water).
U.S. Navy Method:
This calculator uses the U.S. Navy circumference method, which estimates body fat percentage based on height and circumference measurements. It's a simple, non-invasive method that provides reasonable accuracy.
Formula (Male):
Body Fat % = 86.010 × log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76
Formula (Female):
Body Fat % = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 × log10(height) - 78.387
How to Measure:
- Neck: Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple) with tape perpendicular to the long axis
- Waist (Male): Measure at the navel, horizontal to the floor
- Waist (Female): Measure at the narrowest point, usually just above the navel
- Hip (Female only): Measure at the widest point of the buttocks
Important Notes:
- This is an estimation method - actual body fat can vary
- For more accurate results, consider DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing
- Body fat percentage alone doesn't indicate health - consider overall fitness
- Essential fat is necessary for normal body function
- Consult healthcare professionals for personalized health assessments
